about

“All my songs are written from a personal and autobiographical point of view, and this one draws inspiration from a fractious and toxic relationship. I wrote and first recorded “Goodbye” around 7 or 8 years ago - it ended up in my vaults and never saw the light of day until now.

The original recording was unearthed and taken to Transmission Rooms Recording Studio in Drumlish, Ireland, adding drums/percussion and bass, the track was ultimately given a facelift by friend and musician Mick Cronin.”

On his musical growth, Matt adds “In my late teens and early twenties, learning to sing like Joe Strummer and play like The Wailers became something of an obsession, but I would invariably find that whenever I was left on my own with an acoustic guitar, it was the songs of Luke Kelly and Christy Moore that I would find myself playing.

Tipping my hat to my hometown of Liverpool, Mick Head of Shack is a huge inspiration too. He is the quintessential songwriter’s songwriter.”

lyrics

GOODBYE
This time it’s goodbye
I have to be the one to make this moment die
This boys gonna fly
Cos I’ve been sitting here, pushing down my fear
Here we are again, the rain came in and drenched my skin

So silently we sit when you are here
Just keep on holding on year after year
And you’re gonna lose everything, everything again

You’re walking out on me
I watched you sleep, I lived to see if we’d hit the ground
Never coming down
Cos I’m too young to stay
But not too old to run away and start it again
Find my true voice and let it begin

So silently we sit when you are here
Just keep on holding on year after year
And you’re gonna lose everything, everything again

So now I’ve finally grown
Spread my wings and flown, but you just can’t see
This boy never will be free
The words I speak ain’t my own
I’m not that person I’m not that cold
Here we are again
My name is mud my name is sin

So silently we sit when you are here
Just keep on holding on year after year
And you’re gonna lose everything, everything again
Yeah you’re gonna lose everything, everything
This time it’s goodbye
